Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about this app.

Q. What is the 72-hour rule for impulse buying?

When you want something you hadn't planned to buy, you wait 72 hours (3 days) before deciding. If you still need it after the wait, you can buy it with a clear head; Cool Down turns that pause into a timer and a record.

Q. Why 72 hours, and can I change the timer?

Urges sparked by a flash sale or a stressful day often fade with time, so the point is to put a few days between wanting and buying. Cool Down uses a fixed 72-hour timer, and the duration can't be changed.

Q. How do I add items I want to buy?

Tap 'Share' in Safari, Chrome, or a shopping app and pick Cool Down to fetch the item's name, price, and photo automatically (some stores aren't supported). You can also enter items manually; you'll write one reason you need it (at least 10 characters), and up to 6 items can be locked at once.

Q. What happens if I buy before the 72 hours are up?

You can 'Break the Seal' and mark it as bought, but it's recorded as a regretful purchase and shows up in your stats. Try to hold out for the full 72 hours.

Q. How do I see how much money I've saved?

Every item you pass on after the timer is added to your 'Money Saved' total and shown on a GitHub-style heatmap. You can also set a savings goal for what you'd rather spend that money on.

Q. Can Cool Down analyze my spending habits?

Deep Analysis shows your top 3 most tempting categories and your defense rate (how often you held back) in each, and you unlock it by watching an ad. Seven days after a purchase, you rate it on a 5-point regret scale to spot which buys you tend to regret.

Q. Is Cool Down free?

Yes. It's free to download with no in-app purchases; the app is supported by ads.

Q. Is it on iPhone and Android, and where is my data stored?

Cool Down is available on iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). The items and prices you add are stored only on your device, not on a server.
